So you’ve been meaning to get professional headshots. Am I right?
Let’s be honest here: there’s something special about having a good photo of yourself. It’s empowering to be able to send off a photo of yourself, whether for a podcast interview, an article feature, uploading to social networks, THAT YOU LOVE.
And I’ll admit, I haven’t always been the best about updating my own headshots. It wasn’t until I really dove into the world of personal brand photography that I realized the importance and value of getting your headshots taken on a regular basis.
Up until about 2019, I realized I had been using the same headshot that was from 2015! I didn’t think that it had been that long, but it had. So I get it. You get killer headshots taken that you love, and you don’t think to update them, because you have a photo you love. I totally understand.
At the end of last year, I knew as a brand photographer, I need to lead my clients by example. I can’t ask my clients to update their headshots if I’m not doing it, right? I booked a natural light studio and worked with a photographer friend to take some new photos. And I can’t tell you the difference it makes to have new photos of yourself looking like a fully functioning business owner. Not just my kids’ tired mom.
Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of working with business owners on their own headshots and brand photography, and it’s completely reinforced how I feel about having a good photo of yourself. Honestly, it’s something everybody deserves to have, and here is why.
Why get professional headshots: INCREASED CONFIDENCE
Have you ever had a photo of yourself where you looked great? You love the photo so much (I know this is a rare occurrence amongst women!) that you’re not afraid to share it everywhere. And when other people see it, they shower you in compliments (added bonus). There’s something so empowering about having a photo that you love.
It’s a simple, but powerful thing. That moment when you see yourself as other people see you. That moment you really start to believe that you can be an amazing business owner, spouse, mom, dog-mom, etc. My favorite thing is when I’m working with someone and show them the back of my camera, and hearing Oh my gosh, is that me? I look so good! Because YES, you do!
Why get professional headshots: CELEBRATION
When was the last time you got a photo taken of just yourself? It’s probably been a while, right? We tell ourselves the story that we don’t have time, we don’t have a reason, or why would anyone want that?
However, I’d argue that you are worth celebrating now. Look at all you’ve done in your life. You’re an amazing human! Let’s celebrate and document who you are in this season of life. You are worthy of celebration. Period. The end.
Sidebar to all the business moms: I see you. Running around, taking care of your kids and your home, and running a business. Don’t downplay that you are flipping incredible to manage all the things. Don’t hide from photos. People need to see you.
Make Sure Your Headshot is Current
There are practical reasons to get professional headshots, too. If you’ve had a major change to your look (love a new cut & color), or it’s been a few years, it’s a great time to get new photos taken. Your headshot should look like you, now. Stay current!
I’m for sure raising my hand as guilty for using an old headshot for far too long. Almost as if I was trying to hold on to myself of the past. But again, I need to lead by example for my clients and it’s important to update your headshot if you don’t still look like you of 5 years ago.
I know we all love holding on to photos taken when we were a few years younger. Or when we had a few less wrinkles. However, a good photographer will make you look amazing regardless of your age or body changes. Even if you look a little different than years past, you are no less worthy of that celebration.
Professional Headshots don’t have to be boring
I know when most people think about headshots, they may think about actor headshots or the typical realtor headshot with the arms crossed that you see on business cards and broker signs.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. When you are the business owner, you get to decide what your headshot looks like. Yes, you still want a distraction-free photo of your face, but that doesn’t mean that it has to be against a white background or wearing a blazer. Only if that’s what you want.
When you get professional headshots, consider your audience, your ideal client, who you connect with best. Would your headshot bore them or instill trust and empathy? I’m guessing you never really thought about that aspect before. Because before someone works with you, especially if there is a significant investment to do so, they need to trust you. Start building that trust with a relatable, confident, friendly headshot.
