How to Prepare For Your Branding Photoshoot For Best Results

Want to prepare for a branding photoshoot so that you get awesome results?

If you’re in the market for a branding photoshoot, you might be wondering how you can yield the best results. A branding photoshoot is an investment in your business and so it’s helpful to know how you can best get a return on investment (or ROI).

In this post, I’ll be sharing exactly how to prepare for your branding photoshoot for best results and a guaranteed ROI.

Review Your Branding and Messaging

Before you even think about booking a branding photoshoot for your business, it’s important to review your branding and messaging. If you plan on rebranding or pivoting your messaging, it’s best to work with a brand designer first. In fact, I recommend that clients work with a brand designer concurrently when working with me. It brings the vision into alignment and helps to yield the best photos.

Vision and Plan for Your Photos

When it comes to a branding photos for your business, you must have a vision and plan for your photos. Are you launching a new website soon? Are you launching a new service or product? Those are great occasions for getting new branding photos. If you’re rebranding your business, that’s another reason for updating your brand photos.

I recommend that clients either work with a web designer or have a website template selected (like from TONIC or Elizabeth McCravy) so that it can inform where you’ll be using the photos. When you work with a web designer, they’ll probably be wireframing your site, have photos in specific orientations, and can help us deliver the right photos.

Choose a Location that Fits Your Brand

Choosing a location that fits your brand is important when you prepare for a branding photoshoot. In order to have a branding photoshoot with best results, you should choose a location that fits your brand. Whether that’s a natural light studio or a styled home or perhaps the studio you work from, select a location that makes sense for your brand.

There are websites like PeerSpace and Home Studio List that source and showcase locations available for photoshoots.

Prepare for Your Branding Photoshoot with Inspiration Images

Before you plan your branding photoshoot, you should pull inspiration images from places like Pinterest or your favorite brands. It helps to have visual examples of what you’d like when it comes to posing. Saying that you want photos “standing” can be interpreted in a thousand different ways, so if there’s a specific pose you’d like, have an example of it.

Select Themes or Storylines to Prepare for Your Branding Photoshoot

If this is not your first branding photoshoot and you want to create new photos for your brand, then I recommend selecting themes or storylines. Having storylines for your photos can help shape and define your branding photoshoot and hone in on what makes you unique.

You are the secret sauce of your business and separates you from everyone else. These storylines can include your hobbies, what you do outside of your business, passions, and more. For example, if you love dogs and work with a rescue foundation, that is a storyline that we can shoot for. If you’re a watercolor artist, and teach watercolor to kids, that is a great storyline to capture.

Choose Outfits or Work with a Stylist to Prepare for Your Branding Photoshoot

When you have your inspiration images, your location, and storylines in mind, you can easily choose outfits that will work for your vision. Alternately, you can work with a stylist to prepare for your branding photoshoot.

You can show the stylist your inspiration images, your location, and branding in order to choose your outfits. Wardrobe stylists are talented when it comes to sourcing outfits that fit your brand and vibe.

Find Props that Complement Your Branding and Photoshoot Vision

Props are sometimes the unsung hero of a branding photoshoot. Having props will not only add more personality and texture to your photos, but also help tell the story of your brand. When you’re shooting in a location that is not your home office or home studio, having props can give your shoot a more “lived-in” feeling.

Choose the Right Branding Photographer to Execute Your Vision

Now, the best way to ensure that you get the best ROI on your branding photoshoot is to hire the right photographer. Look for a photographer who specializes in brand photography and knows how to shoot strategic, on-brand photos for businesses. Not all photographers are created equal and there is a special art and science when it comes to branding photography.
