How to Choose the Right Brand Photographer When You’re Scaling Your Business

Are you wondering how to choose the right brand photographer when you’re scaling your business? Finding the right brand photographer will be different than when you were first starting out.

How to Choose a Brand Photographer for Your Growing Business

When you were getting started, you likely understood that you needed “some photos” for your website and marketing. Maybe there wasn’t much strategy behind it. Maybe you hired your family photographer or wedding photographer.

However, when you’re scaling, you’re no longer a beginner. As they say “new level, new devil” and growing a business is no different. You have to think different when you’re at your next level of business.

Choosing a photographer at this stage of business is not a creative one. It’s a strategic business decision. You’re likely repositioning yourself in the market and shifting your messaging to speak to a different clientele than before.

As you get started in business, your main priority is visibility. Let the people know that you exist so they can work with you. However, as you move into a season of scaling, your main priority becomes positioning. Where do you stand in the market and why are people choosing you.

Why Scaling Businesses Need a Different Level of Brand Photography

With increased visibility, you then need elevated positioning. It’s likely that you’re raising your rates and you have to look the part. “Dress for the job you want” as they say. Higher pricing demands stronger perception. And while I hate to say that people judge a book by it’s cover, it’s absolutely true.

You need to look as legit as you claim to be. And maybe your photos have not kept up with you. That’s okay. That’s why you’re looking into getting new brand photos.

As your business grows with team members, partnerships, collaborations, and more you’re going to require a variety of images and versatility as you market across platforms.

What Should You Look for in a Brand Photographer When Scaling?

Here’s how you’re going to choose a brand photographer for your scaling business.

When you’re scaling your business, you need to find a brand photographer who checks these boxes:

  • Strategic planning process
  • Experience with growth-stage businesses
  • Ability to align visuals with positioning
  • Understanding of long-term brand evolution

Your business is evolving and your photographer should understand how to translate that visually for your new positioning and messaging.

1. Look for Strategy Before Style

While you may think that you just need a “good photographer”, you actually should be considering their strategy. Do they have a strategy plan for your photoshoot? Because if they just take your money and say, “See you at your photoshoot”, they are not a brand photographer. They may take nice photos, but if you cannot use the photos, then what was the point?

Do They Ask About Revenue Goals and Positioning?

Your positioning, especially if you are rebranding or pivoting your own ideal client, matters most. What is your positioning for your business and who are you targeting to attract. These things must best considered and is a non-negotiable. If your photographer never addresses positioning while planning your photoshoot, you may want to reconsider.

Do They Understand Your Ideal Client at This Stage?

As your business has grown and evolved, I’m willing to bet that your ideal client has also shifted. You’re no longer targeting the same person. Your ideal client, just like you, is in a different stage of business than they were just a few years ago. And that’s a great thing! But it’s something to consider as you plan your brand photoshoot.

Do They Plan for Multi-Platform Usage?

This is how you get the best ROI on your photos and videos. Knowing where you plan to use the photos – whether that’s your website, social media, YouTube channel, Pinterest, webinars, sales pages, email newsletters, etc is huge. By having that question answered, you’ll be ready to use your brand assets across your marketing no matter the platform.

2. Evaluate Their Experience With Scaling Founders

  • Have they worked with founders raising prices?
  • Do their clients appear positioned as leaders?
  • Does their portfolio reflect authority or just aesthetics?

3. Assess Their Ability to Direct and Elevate Presence

Can They Coach You Into Leadership-Level Presence?

Do Their Images Feel Confident, Not Casual?

Often, small business owners and entrepreneurs who are in the early stages of business need brand photos that make them approachable and relatable. A little more casual, like when you work together it’s like working with a friend.

However, when you step into your expertise and authority, your brand photography strategy is going to shift. When you’re scaling your business or pivoting your clientele, you need authority-driven brand imagery. You’re no longer the relatable BFF, you’re the authority and leader who will get them the results they are looking for. Your images need to look and feel confident.

4. Consider Location Expertise (Especially in Dallas)

Here are some things to consider when choosing your Dallas brand photographer when you’re a scaling founder:

  • Do they understand environments that signal premium positioning?
  • Are they familiar with upscale or modern Dallas locations?
  • Can they recommend spaces that align with your evolved brand?

Because as a mentor once told me “what got you here, won’t get you there” and that’s the same idea here. What got you to this level is not what will take you into the next level. And here’s the difference of where you are right now: you’re no longer a beginner. You’re making strides and scaling and entering your CEO era (if you haven’t already). So let’s make you look like it.

5. Review Their Process From Inquiry to Delivery

Pre-Shoot Planning Depth

Pre-shoot planning is arguably the MOST important part of your entire brand photoshoot. This is where we dive into your positioning, your messaging, refine those details so that I can create a completely on-point shoot plan. If you’re photographer doesn’t do this, and you’re a scaling entrepreneur, you need a different photographer.

Wardrobe and Visual Direction

Wardrobe and Visual Direction is key. This is messaging and positioning without ever saying or writing a word. Visual communication can say a lot. And so it’s important that your wardrobe be selected with care. Personally, I have wardrobe stylists that I refer my clients to for the best outfit selection for your photoshoot. You don’t want to get this wrong when you’re preparing for your photoshoot and investing in every other way.

Shot List Strategy

In other types of photography, a shot list may be frowned upon, but in brand photography it is the map. It’s the map to creating the images that you want, crave, and didn’t know you needed. Your brand photographer should be working from some type of shot list or shoot plan. If not, I hope you’ll be able to use your photos later.

Post-Production and Usage Planning

After your photoshoot, I prepare your images to be used across your marketing, no matter the platform. I do ask that if you intend to use your photos for something like a billboard or large scale usage, that you let me know. If you have a team member or social media manager who manages your content, I will do a post-shoot debrief with them to ensure that they can get the most use of your brand assets.

6. Ask About Long-Term Brand Alignment

  • Will the images still align 12–18 months from now?
  • Are they thinking campaign-style rather than one-day content?
  • Do they understand brand evolution?

Red Flags When Choosing a Brand Photographer

To me, as a brand photographer, the biggest red flag that you can encounter when choosing a brand photographer is the person who just “shows up to shoot”. No plan, no process, no system. To me, that signals someone who is just starting out as a photographer or doesn’t have a full understanding of what a photographer who specializes in personal branding does.

Here are some additional red flags:

  • Over-focus on trends
  • No strategy session
  • No discussion of business goals
  • Portfolio that lacks leadership-level clients
  • Vague deliverables

Questions to Ask Before Booking a Brand Photographer

If you’re currently researching a brand photographer for your scaling business, here are some things to ask your photographer:

  • How do you approach brand strategy before a shoot?
  • How do you help founders who are repositioning?
  • How will these images support speaking, launches, or press?
  • How do you plan locations and wardrobe around brand evolution?

Is It Better to Hire a Specialist in Brand Photography?

As a brand photographer, of course I’m going to say it’s better to hire a specialist in brand photography. If you needed knee surgery, wouldn’t you want the orthopedic surgeon to work on you?

Now it may not be obvious, but not all photographers are created equal. You would not want me to take your newborn’s photos. I have no idea how to do that! But your strategic brand photos that speak to your ideal client? I’ve got you covered.

And as you scale your business, move into your next level of success, or make that next CEO move, specialization matters. Because your brand photos aren’t just meant to be “cute”. They are meant to help your prospective clients move the needle. Make a decision. And instill trust.

Brand photos should be updated regularly, at least every two years. If you’re a heavy content user, then a brand session is recommended every 6-12 months.
