Are you wondering if you’ve outgrown your brand photos? Wondering how to tell if it’s time to update your brand photos for your business?

Quick Answer: How Do I Know If You’ve Outgrown Your Brand Photos?

You’ve likely outgrown your brand photos if your business, audience, offers, pricing, or visibility opportunities have changed significantly since they were taken. Many entrepreneurs update their brand photos every 2–3 years to ensure their visuals accurately reflect their current brand and expertise.

What Does It Mean to Outgrow Your Brand Photos?

Brand photos are a snapshot of a specific season of your business. You may be in startup, growth, or scaling depending on your season in business. And inevitably, businesses evolve, services change, products rotate, and so you need new photos.

I’m willing to bet that if you’ve been in business for 5+ years, you’re not the same businessperson as you were when you started. You’ve learned a lot, you’ve grown, you’ve got experience and receipts. So your marketing photos should reflect your growth and evolution.

Personal brand evolve as well. As you grow as an entrepreneur, gain experience, and practice your skills, your personal brand will grow with you. And just as you’d update your profile photo if you got a new hairstyle or had a makeover, the same is true for your personal brand photos.

The only thing that’s constant is change. As a person, as a business, as parent or caretaker. Things change and grow and updates are needed.

I remember when I went to visit my parents and they had a magnet of their realtor on their fridge. This was a new magnet, but the realtor’s photo? From 20+ years ago! That is modern day catfishing! Especially in a profession like real estate, where you’re meeting clients in person often, your photo should match your current look.

For many female founders in Dallas, Frisco, McKinney, Prosper, and Plano, the issue isn’t that their photos are bad. It’s that their business has outgrown them. As they should, because what got you here, won’t get you there.

Sign #1: Your Business Has Changed Since the Photos Were Taken

JJ Dental Coaching - have you outgrown your brand photos

I’m guessing that the version of you and your business has changed, evolved, or developed since that last photoshoot you had. Maybe you’ve got new services, a new niche, a new audience, or new messaging.

And with all or any of those new aspects, it’s going to call for new photos. Because we don’t stay the same forever. We’re constantly evolving and pivoting and changing.

So maybe, you might find yourself in the situation where:

You’ve Outgrown Your Brand Photos: Your photos tell an outdated story

And now the version of you that’s currently on your website and trying to buttress your marketing, just isn’t working anymore. The longer you put off updating your brand photos, the

Sign #2: You’ve Raised Your Prices

If you’ve raised your prices or changes your offers to serve a different level of clientele, then it’s time to update your brand photos.

Premium brands require premium visuals. Your website is often your first touchpoint and impression for someone finding you online. And first impressions are everything. Especially online where you have seconds to make someone stay or close the window.

And whether you like it or not, pricing and perception are connected. If you had the choice between two products, they do the same thing, they have the same promise, the only difference is price. One costs $10 and the other $50. Which one do you think is better? Pricing psychology says that based on the perception of pricing, we assume that the $50 one must be better.

Have you ever been to a website and based on the visuals alone assume that it must be priced in the premium tier? That’s because pricing and perception are connected

And visuals influence trust. Just like with the example of the product that’s $10 vs $50 and trusting the $50 version more…we naturally trust higher priced things…inherently.

Have you ever searched for a product or service and gotten some quotes? And then you notice that there’s probably a few on the high end, some in the middle, and perhaps some too low? Often, we assume that if the price is too low, there’s something wrong with it…whether that’s rooted in a fact or not.

So, if you’ve gone from charging $500 to $5,000—or from one-on-one services to a high-level consulting offer—your visuals should reflect that evolution.

Sign #3: You Avoid Using Your Current Photos

I hear it all the time. “I have nothing to post.” And usually that’s a comment from someone who is tired of their “current” (but actually now outdated) brand photos. They feel like they’ve used them too much already.

It also creates a bottleneck for many founders and entrepreneurs. They want to update their website, post on social media, and send email newsletters, but they just don’t love their photos anymore. They stick to their 5 favorite photos and that’s all you ever see. That’s an excellent sign that you’ve outgrown your brand photos.

Sign #4: Your Website No Longer Reflects Your Brand

There comes a point in every business where the brand evolves. It naturally happens with time and experience. The founder finds that they want to serve a different level of client and their current brand doesn’t speak to that level of client yet.

So they seek website redesigns, rebranding, new messaging, and new offers. But what can often be overlooked is the photos that accompany those things. Whenever I’m working with a business owner, I want to know about the brand they are building and the ideal client they want to work with.

The photos that fill in the gaps for your website redesign and rebrand are personal branding photos, stock brand photography (that’s specific to your brand), and entrepreneur photos.

Sometimes you may be running a special campaign for a specific offer and need photos for that. That’s a good time to update your brand photos, but on a smaller campaign scale.

Sign #5: You Have New Visibility Opportunities

When your business grows and gets more visibility, you’ll find you have new visibility opportunities. That might look like any of the following:

  • Podcasts
  • Speaking engagements
  • Conferences
  • Media features
  • Guest articles

And if you’re struggling to find a photo to submit for your profile, your bio, or podcast show notes, then you need to update your brand photos.

Your old photos aren’t supporting your next level

We have to embody who we want to become, even if we aren’t quite there yet. Brand photos can help you embody who you are becoming.

Sign #6: Your Audience Has Changed

Another change that often happens as a business grows is that your audience has changed. For example, a coach who originally served startups but now works with executives. A dietitian who did 1:1 work with postpartum clients may have a larger group coaching program for a different stage of life.

Your audience will evolve as you and your business evolve. You have likely outgrown your brand photos. And with your audience evolving, you messaging and visuals need to evolve too.

I recently went through this. I had to shift my messaging to speak to a new type of audience – specifically female founders. When I started in brand photography, I was workign with a lot of startup businesses. And as I grew as a business owner, sharpened my marketing skills, and I knew that I wanted to serve a certain clientele.

As a result, I redesigned my website, implemented new messaging in the copy, and had new brand photos taken.

Sign #7: You Don’t Feel Represented by Your Photos Anymore

This is often the place where most founders and entrepreneurs land. They don’t feel represented by their photos anymore. Put simply: they’ve outgrown their photos.

And it can start to feel like there’s something wrong or something missing. It can affect your confidence. You can start to feel like your visual identity is “off” and it could be preventing growth.

Your business evolves. You hit new targets and set new goals. And as a result, you’re a newer version of yourself. And the new iteration of you requires new visuals.

The strongest personal brands evolve alongside the people behind them.

How Often Should Female Founders Update Their Brand Photos?

If you have outgrown your brand photos as a female founder or entrepreneur, then here’s how often you should update them.

For most founders, every 2-3 years is a good frequency. For founders who are scaling rapidy, every 12-18 months may be a good option. And if you’re in the process of rebranding, designing a new website, or making a major business pivot, that’s a good sign to get new brand photos.

Brand Photography for Female Founders in Dallas and North Texas

Many of my clients throughout Dallas, Frisco, Prosper, McKinney, and Plano come to me after realizing their business has evolved significantly since their last photoshoot.

Their existing photos aren’t bad—they simply no longer represent the level of expertise, confidence, and authority they’ve built. They’ve evolved, their business has grown, but their visual presence online needs to catch up.

We fix that problem together.

Frequently Asked Questions – Outgrown Your Brand Photos?

How often should entrepreneurs update brand photos?

Have you outgrown your brand photos? Entrepreneurs, founders, and small business owners should update their brand photos at least every two years. If you are a high content user, I’d recommend every year or even twice a year depending on your needs.

What if my current photos are only two years old?

If your look or style has changed at all, then it’s time to update your photos. Typically brand photos can last for two years if not much has changed, but chances are by the two year mark, you’ll be ready for new brand photos as all businesses evolve.

Can brand photography help me attract higher-paying clients?

Yes. You have to show what you want to sell and if you’re a personal brand, you have to show your best foot forward. When you invest in yourself, people are more willing to invest in you, too.

Do I need a full rebrand to get new photos?

No, you don’t need a full rebrand to get new photos. However, if you are rebranding, you should get new photos. But if you’re launching a new product, service, or just refreshing your social media content, that is a good time to get new photos.

What is the difference between a headshot and a brand photography session?

Headshots are just that – a photo from the shoulders up that shows your head and face. These are essentially a yearbook photo or profile photo. A brand photo includes headshots and also includes lifestyle photos, behind the scenes photos, process photos (of how to work with you), product photos, and they are more story-driven.

How many photos do I need for my website and marketing?

Most entrepreneurs need 30-50 photos for their website and marketing. However, if you are a high content user (you use social media daily and send out regular emails) then I’d recommend 100+ photos. It really depends on how you intend to use them.

Ready to Update your Brand Photos?

Outgrowing your photos is evidence that your business has grown. Your current photos may still be usable, but I’m guessing you’d like some new variety to throw into the mix.

The question is if your brand photos are helping you show up as the business owner you’ve become.

Because like a mentor said to me, “What got you here, won’t get you there.”
