Meet Dorothy Gautreaux of Gautreaux Interiors. I first met Dorothy when we were both in the wedding industry as wedding photographers. Years later, she is a talented interior designer who specializes in creating beautiful and functional spaces for her clients.

Can you tell us about your journey as a female entrepreneur and what inspired you to start your business?

I’ve been a female entrepreneur since I was 20 and for this business, which is my second one, I was inspired by my love of making homes beautiful AND functional. After lockdown I saw more demand in the market and decided to go for it. I went full-time pretty quickly and I’m kicking myself for waiting so long to finally take the plunge.

What is your business? What sets your business apart from others in your industry?

Interior designer. On a whim I googled interior designers in my area. I was surprised to find there are not many and none of them have the same style as I do.

How do you define success? What does “success” look like for you?

Success to me is getting to do something that gives you life at the same time as providing the income to support the lifestyle you want.

What are some lessons you’ve learned along the way that have helped shape your business?

The answer is always “Yes and it will cost X amount.” This one may sound harsh and I hate that it’s tru but never give discounts because those people will be your hardest clients. I’m not sure why this is but I’ve tested this theory more times than I can count across 2 different service industries and no matter how lovely they are this always tracks so I chose to stay ahead of it.

What advice would you give to other aspiring female entrepreneurs looking to start their own businesses?

Don’t wait, just jump. You can do more than you give yourself credit for and if you love it you can make it work!

What role does personal branding play in your business and how do you leverage it for growth?

Business is personal and customers want to connect with PEOPLE. Put yourself and your personality OUT there for them to do that which will lead to clients that are the right fit.
