First things first, why would you want to start a business from home?
There are plenty of reasons why this could be a good idea for you and your household. No matter your circumstances, it’s never a bad thing to earn more money. Even a side hustle that requires a couple of hours a week can add a secondary stream of income and help you improve your finances.
My own photography business started as a side hustle. As a way out of a corporate job that I wasn’t excited about or committed to staying. Starting a home business or side hustle teaches you the basics of becoming an entrepreneur. You’ll find out quickly if it’s for you…or not.
A home business can always grow depending on your needs and your time. Whether you keep it as a small side hustle or try to expand a new startup into a business that can support your family, here are some things to know before you can get started.
Depending on where you live, there might be different regulations surrounding running a business. Even if you only plan on earning a little bit per month, it’s still a good idea to look into what legal requirements you have to fulfill.
Most of the time, you will need to register your business with the local government and tax authority. This means defining your business industry, providing a name, and what type of business you plan on running. Most small solo home businesses can be described as sole proprietors.
In the US, this will also mean an EIN application. Thankfully, this is simpler than it sounds and you can always find online help for EIN application. It’s really simple to file for an EIN. Consider it like the “social security” number for your business. Note: this is not legal or financial advice; please check with a professional for the best option for you.
You should also check to see if your business needs further certifications. For example, a home bakery business might need to be health checked. It’s best to check with your state because rules and regulations are different among the states.
Some home businesses simply require a laptop and an internet connection to get started. But you might need to come up with funding before you can start selling your products or services.
There are a few ways to fund your business.
First, you can invest in it yourself. If you only need a little bit to get started, this might be the best option as you don’t have to go into debt or lose shares in your business.
Another option is to get a business loan. This will require a plan so you can define what you need the money for and how you intend to repay the loan and earn a profit. However, a plan is helpful for any business.
For something like a photography business, you don’t need much start-up capital. You need a camera, a lens, a computer to edit, some software, and a way to collect money. Those are the basics! You can get your photography business started for as little as $1000-$1500.
Finally, depending on your business, you can look into shareholders and investors to hopefully get them involved. Much like a loan, it’s important to have a business plan that proves you will earn a profit.
As mentioned before, a business plan is important. But you need to plan your time as well as your funds.
One of the best and worst things about running a business is the flexibility. It’s up to you to put time aside to do the work, and you will need to be organized. Create a reasonable and realistic schedule that allows you to fit work around your life and vice versa. This will make you more likely to succeed. You also need to plan things like your marketing strategy and how to attract more customers in the future.
