Just go ahead and picture this: You’re scrolling through social media, and an ad pops up promising the miracle gadget that will change your life. Maybe it was an ad from TikTok, considering a lot of people buy from TikTok Shop. Then, two weeks later, you’ve got a flimsy piece of plastic that looks nothing like the ad, and your bank account feels lighter.
If this hasn’t happened to you, chances are you know someone this has happened to, or at least saw content online of someone being fooled. While online ads can be useful, they also carry that little voice in the back of your head whispering, “Is this real, or is this another scam?”
Actually, with the fact that AI ads are getting pushed more and more, it’s becoming pretty clear that the skepticism is off the charts. Which is exactly why real-world visibility still matters so much. People are cautious now. And for good reason too because between AI-generated content, endless pop-up ads, and stories of people getting ripped off, trust doesn’t come easily. It doesn’t always come from being the first to be found on Google. Instead, seeing a business show up in everyday life gives it that stamp of legitimacy money can’t quite buy online.
Basically, scrolling online feels like wading through a never-ending sea of ads. Every other post is sponsored, and half the time, it’s hard to know who’s behind it. Oh, and add in AI pumping out content at lightning speed, and consumers are left wondering if the brand they’re dealing with even has a real team behind it.
Have you been on Pinterest lately!? I’ve noticed that Pinterest is FLOODED with AI images and ads. What once was a place to pull inspiration images and recipes, has now become artificial intelligence generated images central. I don’t care for it.
It’s not that digital ads don’t work; they do. But there’s a difference between getting noticed and being trusted. If people are already wary of scams and AI trickery, seeing yet another targeted ad might push them further away rather than draw them in.
Now think about walking downtown and spotting a restaurant’s logo on a banner for the local softball league, or catching the same brand’s billboard on your morning commute. Those ads feel rooted in the real world. They’re proof that out of home advertising still works; they still get a lot of trust and legitimacy. They aren’t vanishing from a screen with a quick scroll; instead, they’re grounded right in the community.
It’s the same reason people still value word-of-mouth. So, just seeing a brand physically present feels like proof it’s not just a random name online. It says, “Yes, this business actually exists, and it’s not hiding behind a screen.” Because you’d be surprised how many actual fakes there are out there.
Of course, no one’s saying ditch digital marketing completely. It has reach and targeting that physical ads can’t match. But combining both is where the magic happens. People might see a brand’s billboard on the highway, then later recognize that same logo in their social feed. Basically, that kind of recognition is what makes the difference between a click that gets ignored and one that leads to a purchase.
